Tuesday Lounge Review

Long Ash Cigars
August 11, 2020

Lounge Name: Long Ash Cigars

Street Address: 1728 E 7th Ave
City: Ybor City
State: Florida
Metro Area: Tampa

Estimated Seating Capacity: 20 inside / 30 outside

Overall Rating: 3.5
(note all ratings out of 5.0)

Humidor Size Rating: 2.5
Humidor Selection Rating: 3.0
Atmosphere Rating: 4.0
Culture Rating: 3.0
Air Quality Rating: 3.0

Description: Long Ash Cigars is not only a lounge it is also a Boutique, which means it makes and ages it’s own cigars on the same premises as the lounge. The Long Ash humidor is 95% boutique, meaning 95% of the cigars they sell are their own. In this case the other 5% are flavored acids, which I found to be hilarious. They even confirmed to me that the reason they stock the Acids is so those people that are not real cigar smokers but get dragged in by someone who is will still have something to smoke. Long Ash may very well have the largest boutique line up in Ybor City. They accomplish this not only by having close to 50 different rolls and blends but also by offering each one in both regular and sweet tipped.

Long Ash is located on the historic 7th street in Ybor City. The lounge has a shotgun layout. As you enter from the front you are immediately met by a single roller with a full rolling station and set up to view the cigar making craft. As you begin to move back through the shop you will find a full service bar. This bar has a good selection of both liquor and beers. They try and offer a strong selection of craft beer, with a focus on those made in Florida, although they don’t have any taps, just bottles and cans. Continuing toward the rear of the building here is a nice comfortable seating area. Followed by The humidor next to the merchandise wall. Inside the humidor you will find two walls of cigars, one wall is their boutique selection and the second is that same selection in sweet tip form. Above the humidor you get a cool glimpse of their aging room where their newly rolled cigars will age to perfection. At the back of the lounge you will find the bathrooms and you will also find a few TVs throughout the lounge, with a chill modern music selection playing over the sound system at a volume that still allows for good conversation.

Comments:If you want the best of the spirit of Ybor City and it’s cigar culture all wrapped up in one spot, that spot would have to be Long Ash. It has a little bit of everything you want in an Ybor lounge, a boutique selection, a roller up front, a full service bar, indoor and outdoor seating, sports on the TV, and a central location on the 7th street strip.

The thing that really makes Long Ash is the great staff. I have to throw out a shout out to one of the bar tenders, Ryan, here. About a month before I headed down to Ybor with the ChristianCigarSmoker guys I called down to check with the lounges about their availability during COVID-19. The first two places I called were unhelpful, one not answering and the other not answering my questions. Then I called Long Ash, Ryan answered and gave clear and helpful answers. A month later when we arrived in Ybor, Long Ash was the first lounge we stopped at. Ryan happened to be working and not only did he help us out with great cigar knowledge when we got there, he also remembered me from our phone conversation a month earlier. We found that all the staff at Long Ash to be friendly and helpful with a great knowledge in both the humidor and behind the bar.

Long Ash was also kind enough to provide an exclusive look at the specials they offer. Here are the Long Ash daily specials that run from 4 to 7: $5 Coppertail Brewery Beers, $5 Castillo Del Diablo, $5 Lost Angel Moscato, $5 Wells, and $7 Slownlow Old Fashioned   (Please note these specials may be changed without our knowledge so please allow for variance at the actual location).

Tuesday Lounge Review: Tabanero, 8/4/20

Tuesday Lounge Review

Tabanero Cigar
August 4, 2020

Lounge Name: Tabanero Cigar

Street Address: 1601 E 7th Ave
City: Ybor City
State: Florida
Metro Area: Tampa

Estimated Seating Capacity: 20 inside / 4 outside

Overall Rating: 3.0
(note all ratings out of 5.0)

Humidor Size Rating: 1.5
Humidor Selection Rating: 2.5
Atmosphere Rating: 4.5
Culture Rating: 3.5
Air Quality Rating: 3.0

Description: The first thing that should be noted about this lounge is that it is a boutique, meaning it produces it’s own cigars in house. Tababero is a boutique only so they do not carry any cigars not made there. The Humidor is small but with a good selection of all Maceda cigars, which is the name of their house brand. There is a great boutique atmosphere highlighted by 3 roller stations up front and a visible aging room along the entire left side of the seating area. Tabanero is more of a daytime lounge sporting hours that run from 10 am to 6 pm daily. It backs this daytime atmosphere up by including a full service coffee shop near the back of the shop. This is all part of a lounge that is very clean with a chill atmosphere. Tabanero has no TVs, but does have 6 high end great couches, leading to a culture of conversation and contemplative focus. I would also be remiss not to mention the giant 10 foot tall cigar statue at the front door, that emits real wood smoke every few seconds giving the appearance that the cigar is lit.

Comments: Bottom line on Tabanero is an absolutely incredible place and every cigar smoker who has the opportunity to stop in there should absolutely do so. You might be thinking a 3.0 is a good score on ChristianCigarSmoker, but the way you are talking about this place I would expect a higher number. The answer to that is that we are grading based on Tabanero as a lounge which is in some ways unfair. After all this is a boutique and an absolutely great one, with a wonderful product. In fact I would rate it my top boutique in Ybor City. The coffee shop is great along with the daytime vide. Still as a lounge it loses point for closing early, having a no outside drinks policy, and not introducing the option of watching sports.

So why is it so high on my list of places to go? While taking a look at the description above should give you a good idea to start with, but the biggest factor is the people. The rollers that sit up front give you a look at how the craft should be preformed. The people that work there include men like Steve, who gave us a history lesson second to none about the city of Ybor. You can see this history in the Ybor episode of the ChristianCigarSmoker Podcast (coming soon). And finally, there is the owner, Yanko Maceda. Sr Maceda is a great cigar man, who is forward thinking, even tempered, and engaging. If you would like to hear more about Yanko Maceda, Tabanero, and our time there, check out “A Conversation with Yanko Maceda: Why the Cigar Industry Needs to Stop Being Cut-Throat“.

(note all ratings out of 5.0)

Humidor Size Rating: 4.0
Humidor Selection Rating: 4.0
Atmosphere Rating: 4.0
Culture Rating: 5.0
Air Quality Rating: 3.5

Description: This lounge may not look like much from the outside, but head on in and it packs a punch. The Smoke Ring is located on the inside bend of a small “L” shaped strip mall. However even it’s location is deceptively good, as it is wedged between a craft beer bar and a home brew store. Inside you will find a large, 3-aisle humidor, with a great selection and solid prices. Next to the humidor is a large seating area with couch circles, tables, and several nice TV’s. The lounge has a very knowledgable staff and excellent ownership.

Comments: This may be my favorite lounge in the world to date. It is unassuming but it is solid in every way and the culture there is just amazing. At the Smoke Ring you will find the just right combination of loyal regulars and visitors that come and go. Add that to the welcoming Texas culture, the great cigar knowledge, and the laid back atmosphere and this is one place I will visit any day.

Description: This lounge is not in a spot you would expect but has a good sized stand alone building. They have an awesome humidor with a very large and well stocked selection at reasonable prices. They also have a lot of seating in the back in a large lounge area with good seating. The downside to this lounge is that it is very rarely used and often empty. A lot of people miss the lounge all together because the door to get back to it is small and not obvious.

Comments: If you are looking for a lounge in Kalamazoo this is about the only option.

Tuesday Lounge Review: The Downtown Smoking Club, 3/31/2020

Tuesday Lounge Review

The Downtown Smoking Club
March 31, 2020

Lounge Name: The Downtown Smoking Club

Street Address: 406 S Washington Square
City: Lansing
State: Michigan
Metro Area: Lansing

Estimated Seating Capacity: 30

Overall Rating: 4.5
(note all ratings out of 5.0)

Humidor Size Rating: 2.5
Humidor Selection Rating: 3.0
Atmosphere Rating: 4.0
Culture Rating: 4.5
Air Quality Rating: 4.0

Description: This Lounge is in a great location in downtown Lansing, just down the street from the Michigan capital building. It is located in a store front right next to a brewery, with which they have a great relationship and growlers making the trip over is common. The lounge is a shotgun style building with 3 sections. The front section has the humidor and counter area along with a table. The middle section is a beautiful seating area, with elegant furniture, a large TV, and comfortable seating. The back section holds a pool table (free), large card table, bathroom, and kitchenette with fridge and glasses. Out the back there is a small enclosed patio. As is true with most Michigan lounges you are free to bring in your own food and drink, and they do have lockers available.

Comments: Although the Downtown Smoking Lounge is not the largest or fanciest lounge in Michigan, it is unquestionable my favorite. It has 2 factors that really make it stand out. The first is the owner, who is also the main host and manager. His name is Al and he is such a staple that many people just refer to the lounge as Al’s. As a retired US Marshall and Detroit Cop, Al has great stories and is always ready to talk, but knows not to monopolize your time. He has a custom line of Cigars rolled in the Dominican that you can only get in his shop. The colors sport Al’s name and a fedora and are featured in the humidor. The other great part of this lounge is the culture. It has a great blend of regulars and those in town on business, in part due to it’s location right by the capital. It is also a favorite haunt of guys from Cooley Law School.

Tuesday Lounge Review: Riverside Cigar Lounge, 3/31/2020

Tuesday Lounge Review

Riverside Cigar Lounge
March 31, 2020

Lounge Name: Riverside Cigar Lounge

Street Address: 201 Spring Street
City: Jeffersonville
State: Indiana
Metro Area: Louisville

Estimated Seating Capacity: 30

Overall Rating: 3.5
(note all ratings out of 5.0)

Humidor Size Rating: 2.0
Humidor Selection Rating: 3.0
Atmosphere Rating: 3.5
Culture Rating: 4.0
Air Quality Rating: 4.5

Description: This great lounge has a bit of a split personality, due to a unique set-up. It is actually two adjoining businesses, the cigar lounge and a bar called Match, both under the same ownership. The two sides are divided by a set of double french doors, but you can smoke on either side and you are free to bring drinks from the bar into the lounge as well. You do need to pay separately, and the bar no longer serves food, but you are free to bring in outside food or non-alcoholic drinks (you get your alcohol at the bar. The lounge side has a great low key atmosphere and comfortable seating. There are 2 nice TVs with all the channels and excellent ventilation. One other nice feature is plenty of matches out on the side tables, so there is no need to go ask for some at the counter.

Comments: If you are near Louisville, Ky this is the best lounge around. Part of the reason for this is that Jefferson County, Ky does not allow smoking indoors. This lounge is located in a great spot just over the bridge from Louisville and about one block off the Ohio River. It has a great small crowd of devoted regulars, as well as, a consistent handful of other patrons, largely due to the duel set-up with the attached bar.

Tuesday Lounge Review: The Wright Puff, 3/31/2020

Tuesday Lounge Review

The Wright Puff
March 31, 2020

Lounge Name: The Wright Puff

Street Address: 118 E Main st
City: Mason
State: Ohio
Metro Area: Cincinnati

Estimated Seating Capacity: 50

Overall Rating: 4.0
(note all ratings out of 5.0)

Humidor Size Rating: 2.5
Humidor Selection Rating: 3.5
Atmosphere Rating: 4.5
Culture Rating: 5.0
Air Quality Rating: 3.5

Description: In a great location in downtown location in Mason Ohio, The Wright Puff is located in a beautiful large old home built in the 1800s. Downstairs you will find a large humidor room, two nice lounge rooms with great seating and TV’s, as well as, a restroom. Upstairs you will find three more great lounge rooms. One is a great sitting room, another has poker, backgammon, and darts. The last has foosball and chess, and there is a second great rest room as well. Each of the upper rooms is available to reserve with a larger group, and the high ceilings throughout building help to give The Wright Puff great air quality.

Comments: The Wright Puff was originally thought up in Dayton where the Wright brothers were from and the lounge actually got permission from the Wright family to use the name. The manager Mark is a wonderful part of this lounge and is the author of the book “The Cigar Blue Print”. This in our opinion is the best lounge in Cincinnati.

Introducing Cigar Lounge Reviews

Cigar Lounge Reviews are Coming to ChristianCigarSmoker!

Starting next Tuesday, March 17, we will begin publishing cigar lounge reviews. We will also be launching a directory page that will list all of our reviews by state and city. You will be able to view the full review of a lounge by clicking on the name on the list, and you will be able to view all of the great info our reviews offer to help you find your next great lounge to hang out at.

In the future we will be publishing lounge reviews on Tuesdays. Unlike, our cigar reviews in “The Monday Review” we will not put out a lounge review every week (it’s just not sustainable). To make up for that we will be having our own Super Tuesday next week. Yes, I know for the general public Super Tuesday was last week, but for ChristianCigarSmoker it will be next week. We will be releasing at least 10 initial lounge reviews from around the country.

We are looking forward to bringing you more quality content at ChristianCigarSmoker, and we hope you enjoy this feature as much as we do. Thank you for being a part of the community and conversation here at ChristianCigarSmoker!
